Tsutaya Juzaburo, the protagonist of the historical drama “Berabou – Tsutaju Eika no Yumebanashi”, had a shop on the left side of Gojikken-dori in front of the Shin Yoshiwara Daimon Gate. The Ukiyo-e Cafe is located at 11-4 Senzoku, Taito-ku, which is almost the birthplace of Koshodo. While the exact location is unknown, a look at the map in “Yoshiwara Saimin” suggests that the Ukiyo-e Cafe is located near where Koshodo was located. The Ukiyo-e Cafe will exhibit and sell books and ukiyo-e that Koshodo handled. Around 30 original Japanese books and ukiyo-e from the Edo period created by Tsutaju and artists and comic writers such as Kitao Shigemasa, Koikawa Harumachi, Hosei-do Kisanji, Santo Kyoden, Utamaro, Sharaku, and Hokusai will be on display at any one time. In addition, works by contemporary printers and carvers will be exhibited and sold. You can see, touch and purchase authentic hand-printed woodblock prints, which have been made using traditional techniques unchanged since the Edo period.
Admission is free. As the name suggests, Ukiyo-e Cafe is a place where you can enjoy delicious cafe time while enjoying Ukiyo-e. Experience the world of real “hand-painted woodblock prints” along with hand-dripped coffee and naturally grown tea.
